In honour of International Women’s Day, we’ve interviewed some of our fantastic colleagues to celebrate their achievements, learn about their journeys, and recognise their inspirations. Read on to discover the amazing work the women in the financial, insurance and technology industries do, and join us in raising a toast to all of them!
What is your name and role within SEG? Tell us a bit about yourself!
My name is Tayla Bresser. I’m a designer from Cape Town, South Africa. I work with the Stubben Edge marketing team to create and reinforce company brand image as well as design creative content and marketing collateral.
What does IWD mean to you/why is it important to celebrate?
I suppose I am just grateful to the women of the past that fought for our rights, without whom I would not have been afforded the same opportunities I have had until now. Since I grew up in a fairly equal environment, I do find myself taking it for granted, so I feel Women’s Day is a good reminder of what it took to get to where we are.
What is your proudest achievement while working at SEG?
I think the most significant thing I have done in my short time at Stubben Edge is the rebrand for a couple of the Stubben Edge acquisitions. It involved the revamp of each logo and creating a fitting brand image that they previously did not have.
Who is an inspirational woman/mentor to you who has helped you get where you are today?
I can’t say I was inspired by one woman in particular but rather by many. I was, from a young age, surrounded by women who were all strong in their own ways. From my mother who always manages to stay positive and enthusiastic despite the hardships she has faced (the same woman who, despite telling you she’s not knowledgeable, will best you in any Trivial Pursuit game you dare to enter with her), to my two aunts. One of which owns and runs her own industrial manufacturing and installation business while the other has been the exemplary mother figure to the whole family. Finally, the fiercely competitive nature of an all-girls school always pushed me to do my best.
What is the most important message you want to send out to young women thinking about their careers?
After being inspired by so many different women, I believe that a woman’s strength shows in many different ways. Some women are born to be mothers, others are meant to be leaders. I feel the stigma in society nowadays puts pressure on a lot of women to be career driven and accept nothing less than perfection, but I believe your career of choice needs to reflect what you want out of life and what will make you happy.
